Obituary
Mr Robert McCutcheon13 21 Decemeber 1938
The death of Mr Robert McCutcheon on Sunday last removes one who was widely known and respected throughout the Tuapeka district. Born at Omagh County Tyrone, Ireland, eighty-eight years ago, he arrived in Port Chalmers at the age of 25 from the sailing vessel ‘Timaru’ and journeyed to Lawrence with his wife and two young children.

Employment was scarce at the time and hearing of a position in Timaru he and two companions walked the entire distance to obtain harvesting work at 6s per day. Later he returned to Lawrence and worked on the Gabriels Gully road, wheeling gravel from creek bed up seven slippery planks for a wage of 7/- per day.

About this time, the Greenfield settlement was being sub-divided, and with Home country farming experience Mr McCutcheon obtained work breaking up the hillsides with a single-furrow plough. He worked twelve hours a day and received 25/- per week. Twenty-three teams were regularly engaged and yet many men seeking jobs were continually turned away. Mr McCutcheon then undertook waggoning and visited nearly every part of the Tuapeka district in this capacity.

During the past few years the deceased spent a quiet life in the town of Lawrence. He is survived by his wife and the following members of his family: Mrs W J Fisher (Dannevirke), Mrs F S Swanwick (Levin), Mr R McCutcheon (Balcutha), Miss I McCutcheon (Lawrence), Mrs T J McCutcheon (Dunedin), also 19 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
